This Saturday, Shop Small

We’re proud to participate in Small Business Saturday this year. This Saturday, November 26, will mark the second annual Small Business Saturday.

The perks of doing your holiday shopping on Small Business Saturday far outweigh those of Black Friday. Crowds should be more manageable and you can get some really great deals. And there’s a big bonus–you’ll be supporting your community in style.

We tapped into an article from the Business Insider to share five reasons to cross Black Friday off your calendar and pencil Small Business Saturday in instead:

Avoid the crowds.  Avoiding the maddening crowd should be priority number one for cash-strapped families who just want to get in and get out, and tick some purchases off their “To Buy” list. Many small businesses offer champagne, home-baked goodies, and in-house bands to turn up the fun, which sounds way cooler to us than getting trampled by a soccer mom.

Support local establishments. Small merchants have found themselves caught in the crosshairs of big bank’s nefarious practices, being forced to hike up prices to make up for those onerous swipe fees and credit rewards cards. Additional revenue from Small Business Saturday might enable such merchants to keep prices low and stock even more of those hard-to-find goodies you love.

Help your community. As U.S. News reported, local businesses reinvest in the local economy 60 percent more than larger chains and retailers. And then there’s the power of three: “By supporting a local clothing boutique, a consumer is also supporting a local attorney, tax preparer, and printer,” wrote Rachel Koning Beals.

One-of-a-kind gifts. We guarantee Best Buy won’t be carrying that handmade iPad cover you’ve been after or the delicate silk chemise shipped direct from Austin. If it’s originality you crave, go local.

Incredible deals. Small businesses pride themselves on customer loyalty and are prepared to roll out the proverbial red carpet this holiday season to make sure you know it. Isn’t that better than getting taken by big box retailer’s gimmickry?

To find small businesses participating in your area, go to the Small Business Saturday Facebook Page and enter your zip code.

Purse Perfector doesn’t have a brick and mortar store, but we can still participate in this event by offering up a 15% off code good through November 30, 2011. Enter HOLIDAYSAVE15 when you check out and you’ll be able to cross gifts off your list your friends and family will really be excited about getting.

Apps to Make Holiday Shopping Less Stressful

by Lyn Marsteller on November 21, 2011

How many days until Christmas or Hanukkah? Too few for many of us. Last minute everything is so what’s going to happen again this year.

Yes, we know it would be less stressful and more enjoyable if we bought and wrapped everything in August, but for 99.9% of us, it didn’t happen and it ain’t going to happen next year either.

So, what’s a busy, savvy, frenzied woman supposed to do this time of year? Put some technology behind us and get it done as efficiently as possible.

We’ve looked over some apps for your smart phone (all work on both iPhone and Android platforms) and have found some that make checking gifts off your list a breeze.

Gift List

Where do you keep your list of who you need to buy a gift for? Is it on the back of a receipt? or on a piece of paper you left on your kitchen table only to not realize this until you’ve already fought the traffic, finally found what seemed to be the last parking space in America, and grabbed what you think might be the perfect gift for Aunt Olivette. But wait. Didn’t you already buy her gift?

At this point, the thought of putting the gift down to go home and check your list is beyond the biggest and loudest NO you can muster. What to do? Stop using paper and put your gift list on your phone. This ingenious little app will keep track of it all for you — and not just this time of year — this app is perfect for birthdays, anniversaries, or any gift-giving occasion.

Here’s some features you’ll find with the free version of Gift List by Garland Systems:

  • Organize people into groups.
  • Review your spending and budget.
  • See cumulative totals for people, groups, and occasions.
  • See what you’ve bought and still need to buy.
  • Password protection and backup to SD.

If you want more (and who doesn’t?), for $2.99 you can purchase the full app and add the following futures in addition to the above:

  •  No advertisements.
  •  Enter gifts just by using barcode scanner.
  •  Get details and average price from the web.
  •  Set custom backgrounds for different occasions.
  •  Select from any currency format supported by your phone.
  •  Share lists using email.
  •  Take and store pictures of gifts.

TrackChecker

Maybe you’re the person who avoids malls from mid-November until after the new year. You prefer to be in your pajamas sipping your coffee and seeking warmth from your laptop. Shopping online is so about you and how you do your holiday shopping.

If that’s you, TrackChecker is a great app for you.  No more fretting over why your shipped packages haven’t arrived yet. TrackChecker from Andrey G empowers you with tracking packages from 150+ carriers (including USPS, FedEx, and UPS) worldwide. It’s really convenient: all you have to do it input your tracking number and the app takes over from there.

Here’s the nitty gritty details:

  • Automatic and/or manual checking on several postal services at once
  • Home screen widget
  • Supports notifications
  • Calculates and highlights days on delivery
  • Includes various sorting modes and filters

We hope these apps help make a hectic season a little bit calmer. If you have a favorite app you’d like to share, please leave a comment. We all need as much help as we can get to make things run smoothly and to take some stress out of our lives.
